Estudió economía y tras desarrollar una prestigiosa carrera como productora musical escribió su primer libro Entre tonos de gris, con el que obtuvo un gran éxito, inspirada por la historia que le contó su padre sobre los refugiados lituanos. La obra basada en hechos reales, aunque cuajada de dolor prevalecen sin embargo numerosos gestos de generosidad, valentía, coraje de vivir y amor a la vida. Tras la publicación de esta obra y su excelente acogida, Ruta Sepetys fue galardonada con la Cruz de la Orden de Méritos a Lituania por la contribución a la educación y la preservación de la historia de este país. Dos años más tarde publica El color de los sueños, ambientada en Nueva Orleans, una historia de redención a través de la literatura. Lagrimas en el mar es su tercera novela.
